Josh McNorton is a creative producer, festival director, arts programmer and curator. Josh grew up in Canada and moved to the UK in 2012 to produce a large-scale, outdoor entertainment programme for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. From 2014 to 2016 Josh produced FutureFest, a festival in London about the future, for the UK innovation charity Nesta. Following FutureFest, Josh co-founded the world’s first festival of sensory arts and research, Open Senses, which debuted in London in May 2017. Josh was formerly the Head of Programmes at Rich Mix, East London’s independent arts centre, overseeing the delivery of 400 shows and events per year.
He recently joined Quintain Ltd as Cultural Director - Wembley Park and will lead the establishment of Wembley Park Arts, a dedicated cultural programme resulting from Futurecity‘s 3-year collaboration with Quintain to realise and develop Wembley Park’s Cultural Placemaking & Public Arts Strategies.
Wembley Park Arts will work across commissioning, co-production, cultural infrastructure support and develop local, national and international partnerships.

Gabrielle Brooks is an artist working with photography, video and sculpture. Her art practice and research interests are focused on the uncanny, domesticity and the home environment. She completed her MA in Contemporary Photography; Practices and Philosophies at Central Saint Martins in 2019. Her work is represented by Made in Arts London and held in private collections in the UK and internationally.
Alongside her art practice, Gabrielle is a lecturer and facilitator in photography and currently works for Genesis Imaging in Fulham as Marketing Manager. She has previously worked in London-based galleries and through her various roles has in-depth knowledge of the production, marketing, and sales of photographic and fine art work in exhibitions.

The Ashurst Emerging Artist Prize was joined by 'People's Art Critic' Tabish Khan for an evening taking a wry look at what works and what doesn’t work in the art world, inspired by Tabish's FAD Magazine column "What's Wrong with Art". The evening saw a panel, including Tabish, joined by industry experts Artist Coach Martha May Ronson and Irish Artist Stephen Doyle to discuss what’s wrong but also what we can learn and improve on in the visual arts. It was a fun evening delivering career development tips to kick-start your new year!

He is credited with the first work to openly discuss queer/transgender identity on the walls of the National Gallery of Ireland and was selected as one of the 'Top 50 People to Watch' by the Irish Times.

For the launch of the sixth instalment of the Ashurst Emerging Artist Prize we discussed what makes a strong application and how in the wider art world you and your practice can stand out from the crowd.
Our newest judge Melanie Lenz, digital art curator at the V&A Museum, was joined by Charlie Schaffer and Averil Curci. Charlie is a portrait painter that was Shortlisted for the Ashurst Emerging Artist Prize in 2016 and more recently won the BP Portrait Prize 2019 and exhibited in the National Portrait Gallery. Averil is on this years judging panel and an independent art advisor and former director for a Mayfair art gallery. She specialises in photography, and curated the exhibition for our Photography Award Winner 2019, Brendon Kahn.
Moderated by judging panel chairman Conrad Carvalho we discussed what we hope to see in applications to the art prize and give their top tips on what catches their eyes as curators, art buyers for collections and clients and gallerists, as well as thoughts on what happens after finding art prize success. The evening gave attendees tips they can use to improve their application for the 2020 prize and an insight into what artists need to do to stand out to art world professionals.

We organised an afternoon at our supporters, printing and finishing experts Genesis Imaging to learn how to prep, produce and edition prints of your work. The session was led by our Photography Judges Genesis Imaging Creative Director Mark Foxwell and Art Advisor Averil Curci.
For photographers or artists wishing to produce limited edition works, this afternoon session guided how to format a digital file, select the materials and processes that will produce the best version of your work, discuss the importance of archival materials and look at best practice with editioning work and producing certificates of authenticity.

The third instalment of the Ashurst Emerging Artist Prize 2019 talk series aimed to get you energised and feeling confident about taking on 2019.
We were thrilled to be joined 3 experts; Creative Coach & author Deborah Henry-Pollard, Photographer & short film maker David Stewart & multidisciplinary artist Lauren Baker. They shared top tips on boosting motivation and resilience, looking after creative wellbeing, getting organised and building a career as an artist.
Creative Coach Deborah has been a mentor in the arts for over 10 years working with individuals and organisations like the West Dean College is a trustee of ArtCan, a platform that supports emerging artists. Her book What’s Your Excuse for not Succeeding as an Artist was published in 2018. She brings key tips on nurturing your potential and getting over artist block.
David has worked as a Photographer and Short film maker for over 30 years. His short film Cabbage was nominated for a BAFTA and David's art work has also won prestigious Photography Awards. David has published several photo books, his most recent being Paid Content which was part of a wider project that included a solo show at photography gallery Wren London. David brings a wealth of experience of simultaneously managing a commercial practice alongside growing his art practice.
Multidisciplinary Artist Lauren Baker art practice has taken her all over the world. She has created installations at the V&A, Tate Britain and Tate Modern and her work is held in collections worldwide. Lauren was invited to speak about her experience of the art world and she brings her tips on how to unearth your full potential and her experience of growing her own art career a self-taught artist.

The second talk in this year’s Ashurst Emerging Artist Prize looked at how to organise an exhibition; from the planning, curation and marketing to logistics and working with external organisations and venues. We invited two experts to share their knowledge at this free talk. Firstly, curator and collector Tim Sayer who has collected art for over 50 years, bequest his collection to the Hepworth Wakefield and consequently curated an exhibition including works from both his and their collections in 2016. Our second expert, Ginevra Fiorentini, is the Founder and Director of Presenza an organisation that, through its programme of exhibitions, aims to bring contemporary, emerging artists into public and commercial spaces to engage with wider audiences and make contemporary art as accessible as possible. Between our two experts we shared tips and discuss the challenges of organising your own exhibition.

The first event in the Ashurst Emerging Artist Prize 2018 talk series gave detailed insight into how the judging process works and how we choose the winners. We explained the finer details of what we look for in artists, artworks and submissions, and also what we don't want to see. We described our vision for the prize and how the judging panel picks the shortlist and winners despite having very different tastes and expertise in art.

The second instalment in this year’s Ashurst Emerging Artist Prize 2017 talk series (29 Nov 2016) discussed how to increase your likelihood of gaining gallery representation. We gave you ideas that you can implement yourself, as well as tips on the do's and dont's of approaching galleries. We believe the idea of being 'discovered' by a gallery is a little outdated and that putting some focus and work into getting connected and seen can go a long way. We told you how to get seen by art professionals, how to present you and your work in the best way possible, how best to interact with art galleries and discuss how to navigate self-representation alongside looking for gallery representation.

Providing practical tips on submitting applications to things such as art prizes, funding opportunities and exhibitions, our industry experts will guide you through how to maximise the chances of success, and how to benefit in some way from each application you submit.
