Kyveli Anastasiadi

Ashurst Emerging Artist Prize 2016 - Highly Commended by the Judges

The Shortlisted Artwork

Picture
Physical Thinking is a photographic collage that features the artist ensconced with a wire sculpture of her own invention. As part of her heuristic approach to architecture, Anastasiadi finds herself in an act of discovery whereby the body replaces the architect’s sketchbook. The lines used to plot out buildings acquire new agency when manifested in three-dimensional space – when they are embodied through the actions of dance and performance. The linearity of the sculptural form is an embodiment of movement and appears to trace the gestures and measurements of the artist even if perhaps the wire device isn’t fully under her control.

Artist Statement

Kyveli Anastasiadi is an artist, performer and architect. Her work skilfully blends these domains, crossing over urban design with dance, sculpture, filmmaking and other expressive media. Having trained as an architect, one of Anastasiadi’s central concerns is the way in which the human body can be used to represent space. The movement of the human form becomes a tool to discover and explore new and under-considered facets of the architectural domain. Reciprocally, everyday objects and buildings are inspirational and have lead her to develop new choreographies intended to uncover the significance of architectural form under the auspices of human movement.
Anastasiadi artistic work challenges conventional architectural typologies and stereotypes, questioning how architecture would exist if it were to be performed rather than sketched on paper, and the results that would stem from this process of embodiment.

About the Artist

Kyveli Anastasiadi received her BA (Hons), UCA, Canterbury, Kent and her MArch, Bartlett, UCL, both in Architecture. She has worked at various architectural firms in London and Athens. She is currently with the firm Alessandro Isola Ltd., London.
